How filming on location is becoming more considerate. Promoting sustainable filmmaking across England.
As part of our Filming in England’s Summit in 2024, Sustainable Film were invited to discuss practical solutions for greener filmmaking across the regions in the UK.
Why sustainable location filming matters
With its breathtaking landscapes, rich history, and diverse ecosystems, the UK offers filmmakers endless creative opportunities. But with great opportunity comes the responsibility to protect these resources. That’s where sustainable filmmaking steps in. Combining artistry with environmental consciousness to ensure that incredible productions don’t come at a cost to the planet.
The film below features our Director Jimmy Keeping, who explores key topics such as reducing environmental impact on set and the importance of collaboration to drive change.
Here is a snapshot of what Jimmy Keeping covers.
Environmentally friendly location shoots
Filming in England’s scenic location, whether it’s coastal cliffs, ancient forests, or heritage landmark, requires careful consideration. Productions now take steps to minimise their impact, such as protecting sensitive ecosystems and adhering to strict guidelines for shooting in areas like Sites of Special Scientific Interest.
Renewable energy on set
Gone are the days of relying solely on diesel generators. Film crews are embracing alternatives like grid tie-ins, hydrogen power, and hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) fuel. These innovations drastically cut emissions and improve air quality around set, creating a healthier environment for everyone.
Sustainable waste management
The waste generated on film sets can be significant, but new strategies are turning waste into opportunity. Recycling, using reusable materials, and redistributing leftover food to local communities or crew members are just some of the ways productions are reducing their environmental footprint.
Protecting Biodiversity
Productions are working closely with ecologists to ensure filming doesn’t harm local wildlife or habitats. From avoiding disruption to protected species to supporting restoration projects like sand dune planting, filmmakers are finding ways to leave locations better than they found them.
Green catering practices
Catering is another area seeing major improvements. Many film sets are ditching single-use plastics in favour of reusable crockery and containers. Plus, leftover food is being redistributed to reduce waste—a small act that can make a big difference.
Sustainable set construction and deconstruction
Building and breaking down film sets can create a lot of waste, but sustainable solutions are changing that. Responsible set deconstruction, reuse of sets and timber recycling are becoming the norm, ensuring materials are reused rather than discarded.
A better experience for everyone
Sustainable practices benefit not just the environment but the quality of the production itself. Cleaner air on set, less waste and responsible resource use create a healthier and more efficient work environment for cast and crew.
Respect for local communities
By working with local communities and leaving locations in better condition, filmmakers foster goodwill and preserve the beauty of the areas they showcase.

The end of the video offers a discussion between Hannah MacLeod, Partnership Manager at Filming in England, and our Co-Founder, Amelia Price. They dive into the responsibilities that Studios and Streamers face, particularly regarding sustainability on set. It’s a conversation that goes beyond just rubbish and recycling, highlighting the significant influence of the industry’s supply chain and the critical role of regional infrastructure in filming locations.
Become a sustainable supplier
Filming in England supports the sustainable suppliers movement with its comprehensive regional supplier directory. Featuring over 1,000 listings across a range of services—from catering and car hire to prop houses and portable toilets—this directory ensures everything needed for film and TV production is covered.
Their collaboration with us here at Sustainable Film means that they maintain rigorous sustainability criteria in their supplier application process, further bolstering their commitment to responsible filmmaking.
